Michael Collins, 1940

Michael Collins was an IRA hero until the Civil War when he led the Free State forces against the IRA in defence of the Treaty that he had signed. He was assassinated by his opponents in 1922. This portrait was painted long after his death, as his reputation as an Irish hero was growing. Lavery knew him well as he had stayed in his house while negotiating the Treaty in 1921.
