Falls Road-born Joe Devlin was an elected nationalist MP representing the Irish Parliamentary Party in both Kilkenny and Belfast West. A skilled politician and talented public speaker, he represented nationalist interests in the British and Northern Irish parliaments until 1932 when frustrations with British attitudes finally led to abstentionism.
