Éamon de Valera, 1921

Éamon de Valera was central to Irish independence. Having sent Collins and Griffiths to negotiate the Treaty he refused to accept it when they signed it without consultation. His hard line led to civil war. Despite being on the losing side he reconciled himself to the realities of the new political arrangement, becoming Taoiseach three times, and was President of Ireland until 1973.
